HSE Education and Orientation

Research found that, when workers go through a formal orientation, project incident rates are cut in half.  Incident rates plummet when a site-specific orientation and training program is implemented, there is follow-up and monthly training toolbox meetings take place, and safety training is a line item in the project budget.

Thorough site-specific employee orientation programs are critical in not only providing regulatory training but more important in the relaying of clear HSE expectations.  Site management's presence and direct interaction with employees during this orientation process is critical in demonstrating both leadership and commitment to the agreed-upon site HSE plan.

Weekly and daily safety "toolbox" meetings are a proven means to communicate HSE information to employees.  Projects should review settings and atmosphere of meeting areas (such as loud noise and dim lighting) to ensure employees have the opportunity to clearly receive valuable HSE messages.  Studies performed have identified that some days are better than others  to hold toolbox meetings and gain the most value.  Mondays are used quite often, but are noted in the study as possibly being the worst, Tuesdays through Thursdays are only a little better, but when the meetings are varied through the week, this is noted as being the best.
